NFL free agency: Eagles sign running back Matt Jones

Former Redskins and Colts running back Matt Jones is heading to Philadelphia, the team announced Wednesday.

Jones signed a two-year contract, and according to NFL Network, he won a three-back workout Tuesday that included Terrance West, while visiting the team.

The Steelers are coming off four consecutive playoff berths and Mike Webster”>http://www.officialsteelerslockerroom.com/elite-mike-webster-jersey”>Mike Webster Jersey four consecutive playoff disappointments. Since a prolific 2013 season, Roethlisberger has been inconsistent and inefficient. Although he has put up a few monster games, some low points 鈥?like poor road play and last year’s regular-season game against the Jaguars 鈥?have damaged either his team’s postseason standing or its ultimate fate.

With Roethlisberger’s play leveling off late in his career, and given his own hints at retirement, the Steelers can’t be blamed for accelerating their plans of lining up a replacement.

Part of Roethlisberger’s frustration over the pick is the fact that the Steelers used a fourth-rounder on a QB last year, too, in Joshua Dobbs. When Roethlisberger says the team should have thought more about sitting on their depth chart of Dobbs and backup Landry Jones, he means he doesn’t want to worry about an actual potential heir apparent such as Rudolph.

Shazier will not count against the 90-man offseason roster but is still expected to be involved with the team with the hope of eventually making a comeback from his injury.

Authentic Mens Hines Ward Jersey Shazier, 25, is still rehabbing from a serious back injury suffered in a Dec. 4 game against the Bengals that required spinal stabilization surgery and left him in a wheelchair. Still, he’s been seen doing pull-ups at the gym and hyping the crowd at PPG Paints Arena during Penguins games.

He most recently made a miraculous walk across the stage to the podium at the NFL Draft last week to announce the team’s first-round pick, making for one of the most memorable moments in draft history.

You can look at the league now and the value people are putting on the interior of the offensive line. They’re getting contracts upward of $12 million, $13 million, which was unheard of three-to-four years ago. They’re getting paid tackle money. And there’s such a scarcity up front. I think you saw in the draft when two centers went in the first round and (other) guards came flying off the board early in the second. Offensive linemen are hard to find. You better grab them when you have a chance.

Felony charge from Robby Anderson’s 2017 arrest dropped

Robby Anderson won’t be prosecuted on the felony charge of resisting arrest with violence stemming from his 2017 arrest, his lawyer told NFL Network.

The Jets receiver was charged with the felony in May after he was accused of pushing a police officer at a concert after he was asked to leave. He was told to sit on the ground, but continued to fight and be combative with security.

Anderson also was charged with one count of obstruction of justice from the incident.

In the 2016 postseason, he gave out personalized shields — the size medieval soldiers would feasibly use in battle — and more headphones.

In 2018, it was the suits. What will be next? “I don’t have many postseasons left, man,” James told ESPN with a laugh.

And the Cavs don’t have too many road games left in these playoffs — a maximum of six, should they make it to Game 7 of the NBA Finals — to wear the suits.

“It’s easy to pack for the trips now,” Calderon said. “You don’t have to think too much.”

Hall sat out most of last season after suffering a torn ACL in 2016 and became a free agent this spring following 10 seasons with the Redskins. Derailed by injuries, Hall hasn’t played all 16 games in a season since 2013.

ESPN noted that Hall is weighing broadcasting and front-office jobs now that he’s done with football.

Hall, 34, was selected by the Falcons with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and spent his first four seasons in Atlanta. After a brief stint in Oakland, he joined the Redskins in 2008.

A three-time Pro Bowl player, Hall had been tops among active NFL players with 43 career interceptions. He returned five interceptions for TDs, and he had five fumble-return TDs as well. He also tied the NFL’s single-game mark with four interceptions in a 2010 game against the Bears.

Cleveland in the playoffs has scored 1.31 points per possession on any trip featuring a Love screen for Hill, a number that would have led all duos in the regular season, per Second Spectrum. Love has set just 23 such screens in this series — not enough.

Shad Khan wants the Super Bowl at Wembley Stadium

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan is attempting to complete a purchase of Wembley Stadium, England’s marquee “football” field, and he wants to put the NFL’s marquee game there.

Khan told the BBC that if he owns Wembley he’s going to push for the biggest events in the world to be there, which for British fans first and foremost means a World Cup final, but would also include the Super Bowl.

“Our role would be to provide a world-class venue,” Khan said. “Wembley is a great stadium and you want to get it configured to hold Super Bowl and World Cup finals.”

BUT WHY were every WR’s stats down last year? Losing All Pro LT SMITH for SEVEN games and SEEING DAK GET CLOBBERED is why! That and Dez couldnt separate or get open and WHEN Dak did throw it to him DEZ DROPPED it. Good try as always HATER. Dak got sacked what 9 times in ONE game! But yeah its Daks fault that the WR productions went down last year. And do not forget this team was Always Built around the run, weather it was Murray or Zeke, We built this OLINE to RUN!

“Dez won’t be a distraction” Oh yea, and the sun won’t come up yesterday… One of the more idiotic things Romo has blurted out lately. I’m all for going to bat for your buddy, but try to keep it realistic enough that people will care what you are saying.

“We’re talking about a web back here that is supersized in terms of how explosive he can be,” Stephen Jones said. “We intend to use him just as we’ve used Dunbar in the past. We feel like with Zeke [Ezekiel Elliott] and Rod [Smith] that they fill their roles, and that Tavon can really do some special things for us in addition as well as being a nice threat in the return game.”

The Rams called the Cowboys on Thursday about a possible third-day trade for Austin. The Cowboys did their homework and came to the conclusion that Austin could add “juice” to their offense.

Dallas hopes to get Austin around 12 touches a game, Jones said.

“Obviously, he’s a really talented guy,’ Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He was the eighth player taken in the draft in 2013. Dynamic college football player. One of the issues for him has been his size and how you use him in the NFL. We probably see him as a guy who can be versatile for us. Stephen reference a web back, kind of a dynamic mismatch, running back out of the backfield.

Panthers add undrafted quarterback Kyle Allen

The Panthers got through the draft without adding a quarterback to serve as this year’s backup, but they found a guy who has some potential afterward.

Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Panthers are signing former Houston and Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen.

When the Packers were on the clock at No. 14 in the 2018 draft, the Saints made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.

New Orleans sent Green Bay a fifth-round selection as well as a first-round pick in next year’s draft to swap the 27th pick for the 14th pick.

The Packers flipped a pick worth 1,100 points on the Pro Football Reference draft trade value chart for a pick worth 680 points, another pick worth 33 points and a 2019 pick which will be worth a minimum of 590 points (if the Saints win the Super Bowl and pick 32nd). That’s a 203-point steal in the worst-case scenario.

Less than an hour later, Green Bay made another deal that was virtually even on the trade value chart to move up to draft cornerback Jaire Alexander at No. 18, but few would have criticized them for taking him with their original No. 14 overall selection. They practically stole a first-round pick without sacrificing much if anything in this year’s draft.

The Chargers chose Northwestern running back Justin Jackson in the seventh round, and Gordon’s primary backup last year was undrafted rookie Austin Ekeler.

He doesn’t come cheap, but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Suh took less to go to the Rams. Besides, the expensive part of free agency had come and gone by the time the Rams signed Suh.

This was a no-brainer deal with no long-term strings attached.

The reloading Tennessee Titans have long been trying to take the next step to become a bona fide contender. Even though they won their first playoff game in well over a decade this past season, it felt as though they hit a wall with bland head coach Mike Mularkey.

The Titans deserve kudos for moving on from Mularkey after a second consecutive nine-win season, and for hiring a replacement who is certain to bring a fresh feel and new energy to a young, impressionable team.broncos_121_bfef55fcf667de37-180x180

Why the Devils shouldn’t trade Keith Kinkaid

Dyblenko signed with the Devils from the KHL in Russia on April 20, 2017. He inked a two-year entry level contact, but he did not make it out of the AHL in his first season playing in North America. He posted two goals and six assists over 54 games with Binghamton.

Betts had singled to lead off the game before Andrew Benintendi hit a grounder to first. Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman picked it up and tagged first before firing the ball to second to try to gun down a running Betts. But the ball hit Betts in his right shoulder blade.

Betts slid awkwardly after being hit by the ball and shook off his arm as he experienced some brief numbness.

It hit him in the perfect spot, (Red Sox manager Alex) Cora said. So he wanted to keep going and I said, ‘Nah.’

Along those lines, acting owner Christopher Johnson on Tuesday said people will look back in 20 years and regard the Darnold pick as the moment the Jets became a great team.

What does Namath think of that bold statement?

I can only say, ‘God I hope I’m around in 20 years, to be able to look back with Chris and see that it panned out that way,’ Namath said.

Neil Walker scored from third before Gleyber Torres was thrown out at home after trying to score from second on Judge’ bases-loaded single. His run-scoring hit gave the Yankees the lead again after the Red Sox tied the game in the top half of the seventh.

And for a 20-year-old rookie quarterback, that’s going to be tough to do early on. Because the big leagues, pro football, is different than college football. You’re playing against real men that are sharp mentally and physically. So he’s going to need some experience. Yes, I believe in playing a rookie if he’s capable.

Darnold will indeed face a lot of pressure. sharks-008

NBA’s early-entry list breaks record with 236 players

A record 236 players were on the NBA’s official early-entry list, including 181 from the college ranks.

The deadline for underclassmen and international players to file with the NBA was Sunday night.

College players who entered the NBA draft but do not hire an agent have until May 30 to return to their programs. Which players testing the waters should return to school? And which made a mistake by forgoing their eligibility?

Among the record-setting number of players who will go through the process, hope to receive an invite to the combine and work out for NBA teams are Final Four Most Outstanding Player Donte DiVincenzo of Villanova, Syracuse wing Tyus Battle and Boston College’s Jerome Robinson. A trio of Kentucky players — Kevin Knox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Hamidou Diallo — declared with an agent, while fellow Wildcats Wenyen Gabriel, Jarred Vanderbilt and PJ Washington all decided to declare without an agent.

“But I want to be abundantly clear, if these charges are proven true, if Reuben did hit this young lady, he won’t be a part of this organization going forward,” he told reporters.

Lynch spoke publicly Monday for the first time since Foster was charged with felony domestic violence on April 12 after being accused by authorities of dragging his girlfriend and punching her in the head, leaving her with a ruptured eardrum.

A plea hearing is scheduled for April 30.

The 49ers announced a few days later that Foster would not take part in the offseason program while he deals with the legal matter. Lynch said Monday that Foster also will not be at the team’s minicamp in June.

Lynch said Foster is in contact with members of his player development staff and working out on his own during this period where he is not allowed to be part of the team.

Lynch said the team has been in contact with the league, which could place Foster on the commissioner’s exempt list while the legal process plays out, which would keep him away from the team and off the roster.dolphins_009

Bruins, Lightning ‘start over again’ in series opener

There’s a recent familiarity between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins, who meet in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs after playing each other twice in the final 12 games of the regular season.

“It’s like starting over again,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said of the series that begins Saturday at Amalie Arena. “There’s a little bit of the unknown. You have to develop a little of that hatred, or passion, whatever the word is against a similar opponent every night. I assume that will happen fast.”

The Lightning won the division title and have the top seed in the Eastern Conference after edging the Bruins by a point in the standings. The pivotal game was the fourth and final meeting, when the Lightning posted a key 4-0 victory in Tampa.

Nikita Kucherov set a Lightning record for points in a playoff series with five goals and five assists, but Boston’s David Pastrnak can trump that, getting five goals and eight assists in his series against Toronto. Steven Stamkos, quiet overall in scoring in the last series, was a team-best plus-4 when on the ice just the same.

Tampa Bay finished the regular season with momentum coming off the 4-0 win over Boston, which carried into the New Jersey series.

“In the end, our team had to pick up our play,” Cooper said. “I don’t know that we were at the same intensity level.”

Game 1 and 2 are Saturday and Monday in Tampa, with the next two games in Boston, before alternating the final three games if necessary.

Flanked by fiancée Michelle Rodriguez, Shazier made the walk from the corridor to the stage after being introduced by commissioner Roger Goodell.

Shazier, who underwent spinal stabilization surgery in December after a Week 13 hit against the Cincinnati Bengals, has made incredible progress the past few months. He was released to outpatient treatment two months ago and attended Ohio State’s spring game earlier this month.

Asked how the Shazier appearance came about, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert cited the linebacker’s personal goals.

“When he was ready to walk, he was going to make that determination,” Colbert said. “Since he had been working with us in the draft preparation, we thought that would be a good opportunity. It was up to him. He did great. It’s amazing.”

The Steelers traded wide receiver Martavis Bryant to the Raiders on Thursday night for a third-round draft pick, a move that Bryant called “a blessing.”

Colbert said he would let Shazier tell the rest of the story.sl_cardinals_061

Stephen Curry takes part in 5-on-5 practice, remains questionable for Round 2 opener

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry partook in his first 5-on-5 scrimmage Friday since suffering a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee March 23.

A day before the Warriors begin their second-round series with the New Orleans Pelicans, Curry said he is making significant progress toward a return soon.

Houston stars James Harden and Chris Paul combined for 37 points in the quarter. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, that is the most points Harden and Paul have combined for in any quarter as teammates.

Harden had 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the quarter. That set a franchise record for points in a quarter, breaking Hakeem Olajuwon’s mark of 18 set against the Utah Jazz on May 5, 1995.

“For myself and Chris, we had the mentality to be aggressive, make or miss shots,” said Harden, who finished with a game-high 36 points on 12-of-26 shooting as the top-seeded Rockets took a 3-1 series lead. “That’s what we do. We shoot the basketball. Eventually, they’ll start falling. That’s what happened.”

Harden single-handedly outscored the Timberwolves in the third quarter. Minnesota finished the quarter with 20 points, and the 30-point margin was the Timberwolves’ most lopsided deficit in a quarter in the franchise’s playoff history.

Forsberg leads Nashville with four goals and sees the second-most power-play time and the second-most offensive zone starts, putting him in position to get shots on net. His line, with Johansen and Arvidsson, had a dominant Fenwick of 68 percent and generated 57 shots, 24 of which were his. Forsberg’s defensive stats weren’t gaudy, because his line drew difficult matchups in the Avalanche series. But the bright side is that his line only gave up one goal. His path to series MVP: tread water against Winnipeg’s scoring engine and pound the net when he has the puck.

Boston Celtics big man Al Horford has been on both benches at TD Garden for a deciding Game 7 during his 10-year NBA career. As the Celtics brace for a win-or-go-home showdown with the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night, Horford knows as well as anyone the value of home-court advantage.

A stagnant Celtics offense sputtered Thursday night in Boston’s first chance to close out its Eastern Conference first-round series against the Bucks. But as the series shifts back to Boston, Celtics players believe they have an advantage playing on their home turf.

C’s coach Brad Stevens: ‘Game 7 in TD Garden is what you play for’

“This is where home-court advantage comes up, where we’ve been playing the right way all season,” second-year swingman Jaylen Brown said. “This is where playing the right basketball all year long is going to come to a benefit. Game 7, a lot of people haven’t experienced it on this team. It’s crazy, and I expect nothing short of a tremendous performance from everybody.”

Daniel Descalso and Jarrod Dyson also homered for the Diamondbacks, who upped their NL-best record to 16-6.

Ray was lifted after 107 pitches with two outs in the fifth and couldn’t earn the victory. He gave up three runs and five hits and walked three while raising his strikeout total to 43 in 26 1/3 innings.

Fernando Salas (3-1) pitched an inning of relief for the victory.

The loss snapped Philadelphia’s seven-game home winning streak, and was just the club’s second loss in 11 games at Citizens Bank Park. A win would’ve given the Phillies their best home start in the franchise’s 134-year history.

“We’ll come back tomorrow and be ready to roll,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said.

Arizona has won eight consecutive games at Philadelphia.

“We’re just a team that goes out day by day no matter who the opponent and does our best to perform,” Lovullo said. “We know the Phillies are a quality team. Their record isn’t a fluke and they’re playing with a lot of energy.”

Chris Peters, NHL prospects writer: I’m going with Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban. In Nashville’s first-round series, no Predator played more minutes 5-on-5 than Subban. He had three assists but also got some heavy doses of Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon. Winnipeg is a matchup nightmare because of its overall forward depth, so Subban can be an equalizing force when he’s at the top of his game. Slowing down the Jets is no easy task, but the Predators have shown that they can own the puck when Subban is on the ice. It’s hard to single out just one defenseman, because this team clearly has the best blue line in the league. But I fully expect Subban to be a major factor in this series.

Greg Wyshynski, senior writer: Since I’ve picked the Predators as the victor in this premature clash of the Western Conference’s elite teams, I’ll go with winger Viktor Arvidsson as the key contributor to the Predators’ win. He has 11 points in 11 career games against the Jets, including two goals and five assists in five games this season. Arvidsson had just two goals and one assist in the first round against the Colorado Avalanche but was second among Nashville forwards in shot attempts, with 91. So with a little puck luck, and his pedigree against the Jets, I’ll go with Arvidsson … assuming that his linemate Filip Forsberg also has a strong series.jets_043

Horford, Smart lift Celtics over Bucks 92-87 for 3-2 lead

Al Horford has been the Celtics’ quiet leader this postseason, and Marcus Smart might be the kindling Boston was missing in back-to-back losses in Milwaukee.

The duo was reunited for Game 5, and together, they helped put the Celtics on the verge of closing out their first-round series.

Horford had 22 points and 14 rebounds, Smart made an impact in his first game since mid-March and Boston beat the Bucks 92-87 on Tuesday night for a 3-2 lead.

He checked in for the first time late in the first quarter. Less than a minute later, he deflected a pass and won a scramble on the floor for the loose ball.

A few possessions later, he was helping protect the rim, getting his hand in to deny an alley-oop dunk attempt by Antetokounmpo.

He was also active on the offensive end, helping drive the ball into the interior of Milwaukee’s defense, like when he tossed an alley-oop to Horford late in the third quarter .

Boston made a change to a smaller lineup, shifting Horford to center in place of Aron Baynes and starting Semi Ojeleye at forward.

Ojeleye drew the primary responsibility of guarding Antetokounmpo and handled it well. Antetokounmpo had just 10 field goal attempts.

“It’s on me. I had open shots, but they wasn’t my shots,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think my teammates did a great job finding me, but coming the next game, Game 6, I’ve got to be more aggressive and make more plays.”

“SpaceStation being a local, Utah-based esports organization, they’re going to be able to help continue to push into the esports marketplace. It’s booming,” Jazz chief information officer B.J. Vander Linden said. “We see this as an opportunity to really enter that marketplace, because it’s so different than your traditional sports environment. With the connections Shaun and his team have, it gives us the opportunity to really get into the space and see what’s going on.”

The Jazz will present a SpaceStation announcement in its Vivint Smart Home Arena on Friday during Game 6 of the first round of the NBA Playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Vivint Smart Home Arena also hosted the GameTyrant Expo in September, an event that featured competitions in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Street Fighter V, Hearthstone and more.

The Jazz previously explored esports investment opportunities, such as applying to the League of Legends Championship Series with eUnited in July, with Salt Lake City-based venture capital firm Sorenson Capital, sources familiar with those discussions told ESPN. The Jazz ultimately decided against those opportunities.

SpaceStation Gaming was founded in June, when McBride and other influencers he works with acquired a Smite team. Previously, SpaceStation had been a YouTube channel that hosted multiple video game videos from McBride and other YouTubers.jets_099
